Works completed to bush huts in the Mansfield area

Three high country heritage huts - Tomahawk Hut, Upper Jamieson Hut and Razorback Hut - have been re-opened following completion of major works.  This included the replacement of failed structural timbers and walls, rotted and burnt floors, rusted roof iron, and burnt out chimneys. "The re-furbishment works were carried out in the tradition of the original bush hut design," said the Department of Sustainability and Environment's Mansfield Forest Management Officer, David Hurley.

Funding was supplied by the Victorian Government's Public Safety on Public Land Grants, managed by DSE.  "The safety works are a small part of a continuing program of improving recreation facilities in the Mansfield and Upper Goulburn areas." Working with the DSE Mansfield Crew were volunteers from the Victorian High Country Huts Association (VHCHA), a group formed in 2003 following the blazes that swept through the entire High Country region. Local tradespeople assisted and volunteers from the Australian Landrover Owners Club helped with the Upper Jamieson Hut. "It's great to see these huts have been brought back to their original form and are now safe to use. We urge all users to respect these heritage huts so that they are there for users well into the future," said VHCHA's Gavin Powell. The huts are mainly used by school groups, horse riders, hikers, 4WD groups, tour operators, motor bike groups and anglers.

SUPPORTING POINT COOK HOMESTEAD

On Saturday 8th December 2007 a dozen members enjoyed an end of year get together at Point Cook Homestead Café.  The huts members were joined by members of the Royal Photographic Society and everyone one received a gift of a Christmas Rat (2008 is the Year of the Rat in Chinese Culture).  Following a delicious lunch we were taken on a guided tour of the Homestead by Emma Sutcliffe who manages the site under lease from Parks Victoria.   Although managed as a commercial operation the Homestead needs a lot of attention which cannot be funded just from function receipts (entry to the Homestead is Free).

To help fund necessary works the Rotary Club of Laverton Point Cook is presenting a Blues Festival on Sunday 10th February from 10am to 7pm.  See flyer for all the details.

GETTING THERE - Point Cook Coastal Park & Homestead is located 20 km southwest of Melbourne. Cross the Westgate Bridge and exit the Princes Freeway at the Point Cook Road sign, 12 km from the western end of the bridge. The Point Cook Homestead is located at 1 Point Cook Homestead Road, Point Cook (Melway ref: 199 J3).
