Baw Baw Jans Hut trip - 20/21st March -moved to member area

Postby Charles Burgess » Wed Jan 06, 2010 1:52 pm

A walk in trip to Jans or Stagg hut is planned for March 20/21. This first foray will just be for a survey to ascertain work needed on the hut and we'll go back in Autumn to do any work.

Please reply if interested or leave a personal message for Waynep (HMO4).

preps are in progress .....

picked up a couple of paper maps today .... not carrying the laptop on this one ! ! !

Vicmap, 1:50,000, 8122-S, Walhalla (1:25,000, 8122-2-N, is out of print)

Rooftop, Walhalla - Woods Point Adventure Map, 1:100,000, Edition Two to replace my dated Ed.1 .... also has
the Walhalla - Woods Point Forest Activities map (Ed.1) on the reverse.
1:50,000, Topo (contours)
- ($10.95ea from map centre, Waverley Rd)

Interestingly, both these rooftop maps show Jans/Staggs hut much closer to Hut Trk (outside the National park) than the many co-ords I have for it (approx 300-400m from Hut Trk  ?????) nearer to Swift Crk.

I have Co-ords at:
(from Heritage listing)

DU 382145
same as AMG
4 38 200
58 14 500
or
37.813441
146.299037

and from Strzelecki Bushwalking Club......

When I first heard of the exit route we were to take, I expected quite an adventure, thinking the hut was in the middle of nowhere, but (alas) the logging tracks now come within a few hundred metres of the hut, so after a brief tussle with some regrowth (and a spot of "willowing"), we had an easy walk down the track, reaching the road at Sharpes Track.

Hmmmmmm ...........
How many places will we have to check before we find it ???

The google earth photo below is a few years old but shows the logging track pretty clearly.

Thanx Charles for your co-ords.
Seems the heritage Database is about 1.2400km out

your google earth co-ords above are 14m different to the co-ords posted in the "Jans Hut" thread and 38m from the spot marked on the map you've posted there..... close enough I'd say :)

(BTW ... 322m from closest point of Hut Trk 8-) )

Those points correlate very well with what is shown on my new Rooftop map (as above)

WooHoo
Looking forward to this one

Stevo

If anyone wants Charles' map (448kb) and the .map (4kb) file calibrated for use in OziExplorer, send me a PM with your Email address.

Everything is still go for this weekends foray

My list of particpants :
Me and Sue
Charles and Anna
Bruce Dodson
Steve ( Schmezz )
Michael and Phil ( workmates of mine. )
If you are not on the list above but are coming please let me know.

We will meet up at the general store in Erica - DEPARTING 10 AM on the dot .
My phone number if any issues - 0408299986.
I expect, if we find the hut, we will complete the survey be on our way home by 4 or 5 pm.
Bill Lay from Yallourn North was in the area last week, and had a look for the hut. Aparrently the Hut Track, to the north east of the hut, is drivable for about 3 km from the main road, then it is blocked. This means we will need to walk about 1km along the road and then turn left towards the hut. Bill did not find the hut, but nor did he have a GPS with him.
Location we are initally walking too if you want to pre-load your GPS is :
In Degrees, decimal minutes )
S37 48.290
E 146 18.521
WGS 84

Hi

I have just moved back to Australia after 9 years away in the UK and have been doing some research into Hec Stagg as he is my Grandfather.

Can I please get an idea of the condition of the Hut? I'll also be looking to get membership up and running soon too.

thanks

Hi Peter,
the hut is in need of maintenance and we are working with DSE on that. Wayne Peterken (huts maintenance officer for Baw Baw) is the person to contact. He checks the forum regularly.
