Victorian High Country Huts Association

Huts maintenance season 2009 - 10

To all members; look out for upcoming opportunities to to engage in working bees in the coming months as the HMOs take the chance to shake off the winter cobwebs and get out into the high country.

Our forum is becoming more active so that's the place to go to find out what's on in detail. If you are looking for a quick overview try the summary of events and hut activities in the blue box opposite.

Looking after huts

The association has adopted a regional approach to looking after huts. The High Country is divided into twelve regions for each region a Huts Maintenance Officer (HMO) is appointed. The HMOs are supported by the Huts Maintenance Co-ordinator (HMC)

The Huts Maintenance Coordinator acts as the liaison with the Association Committee, land managers (Parks Victoria and DSE) and  provides support to the HMOs.

The association actively works to maintain and rebuild huts. Members can join in on all activities. Our Huts Maintenance Officers survey huts in their areas, plan maintenance activities, lead working parties, propose huts for rebuild and generally have a good time looking after "their" huts.

Since our inception in 2003, working with Parks, DSE and land owners we have restored 5 huts

Activities

We conduct regular huts related activties including;

Huts caretakers
Many huts already have caretaker groups looking after them. We work with these groups providing hands on support to help them achieve their goals.

Working with land owners
The association works with DSE and Parks to ensure work on huts is undertaken with their support.
